Leipzig goes down against Wolfsburg

Bundesliga soccer team RB Leipzig is slipping deeper and deeper into the crisis. The Saxons, plagued by injury concerns, lost 1:5 (0:3) against VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday after a desolate start and suffered their fifth defeat in the last six games. The Champions League starter has been waiting for a win since the end of October. The situation is also getting worse for coach Marco Rose.

Wolfsburg is currently still on the rise with Leipzig’s former coach Ralph Hasenhüttl. Across all competitions, the Wolves have been unbeaten in six games and have consolidated their place in the top half of the table. Mohamed Amoura (4th, 16th) and Tiago Tomas (5th) put VfL on the winning path early on. Joakim Maehle (64th) and Kevin Behrens (90th + 1) followed up after the break. Willi Orban (82nd) scored the consolation goal.

The Leipzig team, who suffered their fifth defeat in the premier class at Inter Milan (0-1) during the week, were clearly showing their uncertainty. Defensively the assignment was not correct at all. Wolfsburg combined effortlessly and exploited the gaps in the final third. First Amoura scored from close range, then Leipzig’s Kevin Kampl deflected Tiago Tomas’ shot in his 250th Bundesliga appearance.

Rose became active on the sidelines, the 48-year-old fought after winning duels and encouraged his team. When Amoura rose again a little later and duped RB goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, whistles echoed through the arena. Rose acknowledged the setback with a serious expression.

After the false start, Leipzig showed courage and fought to keep up. Lois Openda (19th) and Benjamin Sesko (25th) had good opportunities. However, VfL remained dominant in the game and was the more dangerous team. Wolfsburg took advantage of Leipzig’s vulnerability to counterattacks. Gulacsi struggled to prevent the fourth goal against Ridle Baku (36′) and Amoura (38′).

Leipzig came out of the locker room swinging after the break. Despite the offensive urge, RB did not get any dangerous shots; the Saxons were also too harmless when it came to set pieces. Defensively, Leipzig remained vulnerable. Amoura (64th) missed a great chance, and Maehle was there with a header at the following corner.
