“This is going to go a little deeper:” Lacey Chabert and Dustin Milligan talk about the surprising depth of Hot Frosty and how much it means to them

When it comes to that Netflix schedule 2024there are lots of great new Christmas movies for you to watch. For me, however, the funny yet heartfelt is the best Hot frosty. This film, despite its funny name, takes a deeper look at grief and loneliness at Christmas, and its two stars, Lacey Chabert and Dustin Milligan, sat down with me to talk about how much Christmas really means to them.

To refresh, Hot frosty is a cute romantic comedy that tells the story of a young widow who discovers that she has brought a snowman to life after placing a scarf around his neck. As they spend more time together, Jack the Snowman (Milligan) begins to warm Kathy’s (Chabert) heart and remind her what love really feels like.

Christmas movies are no stranger to the idea of incorporating heavier themes, but many of Netflix’s original Christmas movies have strayed from this idea. However, Hot frosty speaks candidly about how grief affects us, especially during the holidays. Lacey Chabert, who is known for many Hallmark films over Christmas, told me it was a joy to work on a film that “goes deeper” while still staying in tune with the holiday spirit:

It was a pleasant surprise for me because when I heard the premise of the film and the title, I didn’t expect my character to be on such a journey. And from the moment I read the first few pages I realized, “Well, this is going to go a little deeper.” And I think it’s going to surprise people. It’s a beautiful journey where these characters really need each other and help each other. And I find the arc of it so enchanting. It’s also super fun and romantic and there are a lot of Christmas traditions that I think people will pay attention to and find comfort in. So for me there was a bit of everything.

The film definitely has a lot of silly moments – like Jack is watching TV learning how to be human and a sweet dance that takes place in, of all places, a middle school. But despite the more humorous scenes, both Jack and Kathy have some truly heartfelt moments that show how the healing process occurs.

Milligan agreed with Chabert’s sentiments and said that one of the “special things” about making this film and telling this story in general is that these two are going on this adventure together:

I think that’s one of the special things about this film: there was so much joy that we had literally every day. And we’re very happy that it actually made it through all the editing and everything to the final product. And yeah, having these characters go on a journey that definitely explores heavier themes, and I think that these characters have very realistic, grounded experiences and life experiences that they face and have to work through together. It is beautiful. It surprises you a little and in the end it reaches the point of joy where, despite all the hardships, despite everything we have to overcome, if we lean on each other and rely on each other, we learn to see each other, there is joy.

Hot frosty dominated the charts when it was first released on Netflix and is still in the top 10, with Critics call it “cheeky wonton delight” This is honestly exactly what you need during the holidays.

Still, there is a lot of warmth and joy in all of this, and I always look forward to having the opportunity around the holidays to delve a little deeper into the idea of grief and healing.
