Police use pepper spray as a large brawl breaks out after Michigan upsets No. 2 Ohio State

Players from both teams engaged in a massive brawl after Michigan pulled off a shocking 13-10 upset of No. 2 Ohio State in Columbus on Saturday, prompting officials to use pepper spray.

The incident appeared to have started when Michigan defensive back Derrick Moore attempted to raise a team flag at midfield at Ohio Stadium and was confronted by several Ohio State players. The situation escalated when an Ohio State player ripped the flag from the pole.

There were several skirmishes in which players from both teams threw punches.

An Ohio State spokesperson confirmed to CBS News in an email that police officers used pepper spray during the fight.

“After the game, officers from multiple law enforcement agencies helped break up an altercation on the field,” the school spokesman said. “During this altercation, multiple officers from Ohio and Michigan deployed pepper spray.”

The school spokesman said Ohio State University police were the lead agency patrolling the game and would investigate the fight. It is unclear whether there were any serious injuries.

“When you have a great game like that, you hate to see something like that after the game,” Michigan running back Kalel Mullings told reporters, according to CBS Sports. “Just bad for the sport, bad for college football. But at the end of the day, some people have to learn how to lose, man. You can’t fight and stuff just because you lost a game. All this fighting, we’ve got 60 minutes to do all this fighting and now we want to talk and fight. This is just bad for the game in my opinion.

With the upset, the 7-5 Wolverines ended the 10-2 Buckeyes’ hopes of a return to the Big Ten title game. Michigan’s Dominic Zvada scored the game-winning 21-yard field goal with 45 seconds left.

Ohio State got the ball back but couldn’t move it. Will Howard threw an incomplete on fourth down, giving the Wolverines their fourth straight win over their bitter rival.

This Ohio State loss in “The Game” was perhaps the toughest of the last four as Michigan was unranked and capped off a disappointing season. The Wolverines also played without some top players: tight end Colston Loveland and cornerback Will Johnson.

According to ESPN Stats and Info, the Buckeyes had a 21-point advantage, the largest point spread in this rivalry since 1978.
