A 30-year-old Star Wars sequel is getting a new streaming home next month

A 1990s space opera television series that evoked comparisons star Wars will soon have a new streaming home. Babylon 5 will be released on December 1st on Prime Video.




The series was developed by writer and producer J. Michael Straczynski and premiered in 1994. It ran for five seasons and 110 episodes. Babylon 5 Set in the 23rd century, it follows the adventures of the crew on the titular space station – a neutral territory that allows diplomacy and trade between various alien species and humanity. The show’s ensemble cast included Michael O’Hare as Jeffrey Sinclair, Bruce Boxleitner as John Sheridan and Claudia Christian as Susan Ivanova.

The series explores themes such as ethics, morality, oppression, corruption and conflict resolution. Many episodes of the series focused on how these far-reaching events affected the series’ individual characters.


Babylon 5 proved to be a unique television series at the time of its broadcast as it was pre-planned as a “television novel” and the five-year story arc allowed each episode to represent a chapter in the overarching story. At the time, Babylon 5The conflicts of his contemporaries were largely limited to individual episodes and did not extend over multiple episodes or seasons. The events that took place Babylon 5 has proven to make permanent changes to the universe, altering the cast of the series and significantly evolving the universe’s timeline. Babylon 5 has been praised for its complex narrative and won multiple awards, including two Hugo Awards for Best Dramatic Presentation.



Babylon 5 returned with a feature film in 2023

The Babylon 5 The television series originally ran from 1993 to 1998 and included several related novels, short stories and comics published by DC Comics as part of the franchise. In 1999 a spin-off series appeared, crusadedebuted but only ran for one season and thirteen episodes. In 2023, Straczynski announced that he had collaborated with Warner Bros. Animation for Babylon 5: The Way Home. The feature-length animated film saw most of the series’ surviving cast members return to voice their characters for the film.

Babylon 5: The Way Home premiered at Comic-Con in 2023 before becoming available on streaming services a month later. The animated film is the seventh feature film in the series and its story follows President John Sheridan and Delenn leaving Babylon 5 to build the Interstellar Alliance. In addition to the direct-to-video animated film, there is a reboot of Babylon 5 was announced in 2021, but details about its development in the following years were scarce.


Babylon 5 will be available to stream on Prime Video on December 1st.
