A Columnist’s First 50 Years: Reflections on a Long Career | editorial

It is tempting, but wrong, to say that the current administration of the universe is flawed because people are not required to read editorials. This idea borders too closely on progressivism, which, as one critic said, doesn’t care what people do as long as it is obligatory. Additionally, a smaller readership can be superior to a larger one.

Most people don’t read newspapers; Most who do skip the comments page. This means that the few, the lucky few, who read columns do so because their mental storehouses are full of curiosity, information and opinions. In this way, the columnist can draw on the readers’ knowledge base, which allows for big arguments in a small space.
