A few bonus Iron Bowl thoughts and observations on Alabama and Auburn

There is always so much to say after every Iron Bowl.

After taking an original swing after Alabama’s 28-14 win, I went back and took a closer look.

The idea is to add a little more context to what everyone saw at Bryant-Denny Stadium on a beautiful Saturday afternoon into the evening.

So here are a few more late-night observations as Alabama sent Auburn into the basketball season while awaiting postseason news that it will have a wild transition season.

Without further delay…

Sales, sales

Alabama has committed four or more turnovers Saturday 12 times since the start of 2000. The Tide had a 5-7 record in those error-prone games, but improved to 6-7 after giving Auburn four possessions.

The last game with four turnovers came in 2022, when Milroe started for the injured Bryce Young. Alabama survived this game with a 24-20 win because the Aggies, unlike Auburn, made them pay for their mistakes.

The Tigers managed just six points from four takeaways. The most notable failed attempt to cash in came when Jarquez Hunter threw a rash interception two plays in the fourth quarter after the Tigers had overcome a two-touchdown deficit.

Auburn finished the game with two turnovers to Alabama’s four turnovers after the two came in at opposite ends of the turnover margin scale. The Crimson Tide was ranked No. 8 nationally with a -11 margin compared to Auburn, which was ranked No. 128 with a minus-11 margin.

Uptempo Auburn

When Auburn started playing at the pace that made Hugh Freeze a big name in the coaching world, Auburn looked solid. It worked against Texas A&M last week and it worked again at times this week. Like a snowball rolling down the mountain, it needs some momentum to get going.

They moved quickly on the Tigers’ first field goal attempt, covering 72 yards in nine plays with just 2:56 left. Maintaining momentum was the hard part.

Alabama, meanwhile, found success with a bit of haste and foregoing random looks. That was seen on each of the two touchdown drives in the third quarter that put the game out of reach.

Ryan Williams’ appearance

Much of the pregame talk centered around Alabama freshman Ryan Williams, his recruitment and some of the trash talk from Auburn’s Demarcus Riddick. It’s safe to say this wasn’t a memorable Iron Bowl for the Crimson Tide’s most famous youngster.
