A United Airlines flight operated by Republic Airways was evacuated at Newark Airport after the smell of smoke was reported onboard

NEWARK, N.J. (WABC) — A United Airlines regional flight operated by Republic Airways was evacuated after landing at Newark Liberty International Airport after the crew reported a burning smell.

Republic Airways 3439, a United Express flight from Newark to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, took off around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and then returned around 5 p.m. after crew members noticed the smell of smoke in the cockpit, Republic Airways said.

According to the airline, the aircraft, an Embraer E170, landed safely and taxied to an apron area where the crew conducted a precautionary evacuation. Passengers and crew members were then taken to Terminal C by bus.

No injuries were reported and the airline said it was working to rebook passengers and get them to their destinations as quickly as possible.

According to the Port Authority, the FAA temporarily suspended flight operations during the evacuation and then reopened the airspace to flight activity shortly before 6 p.m
