According to Mark Zuckerberg, AI could take up software engineering jobs at Meta in 2025

The AI revolution is rapidly redefining the world as we know it. With AI agents rapidly gaining traction and becoming widely used in large companies to increase effectiveness and efficiency, there is a possibility that some jobs will soon become redundant. In context, AI agents serve as virtual assistants for professionals and automate repetitive tasks.

Last year, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang claimed that coding might be dead given the proliferation of AI. Instead, he recommended biology, education, manufacturing or agriculture as plausible career options for the next generation. Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman echoed Huang’s sentiments, pointing out:

“If you look ahead 24 months or a longer period of time – I can’t predict exactly where that is – it’s possible that most developers don’t code.”

And it now appears that Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, shares the same opinion about software engineering as a plausible career option for the future when he recently appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience show:

“Probably by 2025 we at Meta, and the other companies that are fundamentally working on this, will have an AI that can essentially be a kind of mid-level engineer that you have in your company that can write code.”

Zuckerberg acknowledges that the company may be costly to operate at first, but will become more efficient over time, to the point where the code in apps, including the AI-generated equivalents, is actually created by AI engineers rather than humans becomes.

Coincidentally, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff also shared Zuckerberg’s opinion about the tendency of software development to be automated using AI. According to the executive, the company is “seriously debating” hiring software engineers in 2025. “I think in engineering at Salesforce this year we’re seriously debating whether maybe we wouldn’t hire anyone this year because we have such incredible productivity “We’ve seen the benefits of having agents working alongside our engineers, making them more productive,” the CEO added.

While leading AI labs seem to share the view that AI could potentially take over programming tasks from humans, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella envisions a future in which companies use Copilot Studio to create a swarm of customized AI agents, that make work easier.

Following OpenAI’s launch of its o1 reasoning models, reports emerged touting OpenAI’s advanced software engineering capabilities. According to the benchmarks shared, OpenAI o1 and o1-mini are exceptionally good at coding and pass OpenAI’s research engineer interview for coding with a 90-100% rate.

Software engineering isn’t the only profession on the AI chopping block. Architects and bankers also found themselves caught in the crossfire. According to a report, 54% of banking jobs are vulnerable to AI automation. According to reports, AI-powered tools like ChatGPT and Copilot pose a real challenge to interior designers and architects as they are capable of creating sophisticated structural designs in seconds. Ironically, these same tools cannot create images of a simple, plain white image.
