According to Washington police, the 12-year-old stole his grandfather’s car and drove 160 miles before being arrested

A 12-year-old boy who stole his grandfather’s car and drove it about 160 miles is now in police custody, Washington state officials said Wednesday.

According to a statement shared by Grant County officials on social media, the boy, who was not identified, allegedly stole the car from his grandfather in Issaquah, Washington. The boy had “some connection” to a town in Grant County in eastern Washington state, so Issaquah police notified county officials that the boy might be headed there.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office Motor Traffic Unit went searching for the car after receiving the call. At around 10:20 a.m. they found the vehicle parked on the side of the road. The boy then allegedly “led officers on a short chase,” the sheriff’s office said.

The chase ended when officers performed a PIT maneuver, in which a police vehicle pulled up next to another car, forcing it to make an abrupt turn and come to a stop. No one was injured and the damage to the vehicle was “minor,” police said.

The boy drove a total of 161 miles before being stopped by police, the Seattle Times reported. His route led through the Cascade Mountains.

The boy is in custody at the Chelan County Juvenile Justice Center on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle and felony evasion, the sheriff’s office said.
