Safety is at the center of discussion in the football community and has led to significant changes in the sport. Although we’ve seen kick returns almost die out in college football in hopes of reducing head injuries, that doesn’t completely solve the problem.

The college football community learned this the hard way back in October when Alabama A&M linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr. suffered a head injury in the game.

On Wednesday, November 27, Burnett passed away. On Friday, coroners concluded that the official cause of death was the head injury he sustained on October 26.

Previously Alabama A&M make a statement On Wednesday morning, they informed the public of Burnett’s death before later retracting their news report after hearing from a UAB Hospital representative.

“We express our immediate regret for the spread of false information,” Alabama A&M said in its second statement Wednesday.

Burnett, 20, was a redshirt freshman at Alabama A&M. After transferring from Grambling State, he played in seven games this season and recorded five tackles.
