Alabama A&M retracts statement on injured athlete’s condition, saying he is stable

An Alabama A&M University (AAMU) football player remains hospitalized after suffering an injury on the field last month.

The university retracted a statement Wednesday morning announcing the death of Medrick Burnette Jr.

AAMU said it spoke to UAB Hospital, where Burnette is being treated, and was informed that Burnett was alive.

We are retracting the news of Medrick Burnette Jr.’s death, originally shared by an immediate family member on Tuesday evening. Our staff honored the family member’s wishes and notified the A&M community and beyond of this unfortunate incident. When we heard from a UAB Hospital representative this afternoon, we learned he was still alive. We express our immediate regret for spreading false information, but are very pleased that Medrick remains in stable condition.

ABC 33/40 has reached out to Burnette’s family for more information about his condition.

Burnett is a redshirt freshman from Lakewood, California. He previously attended Grambling State University.

According to aGoFundMe postBurnette was seriously injured by a woman claiming to be Burnette’s sister after a head-on collision during the Magic City Classic game in Birmingham on October 26.

The post went on to explain that Burnette suffered multiple brain bleeds. More than $33,000 was raised to help the family with their expenses.
