Alabama leads Auburn 14-6 in the 89th Iron Bowl

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) – The 89th Iron Bowl between Auburn and Alabama took place at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday, a matchup that had big implications for both teams.

For the Tigers: Win and you go to a bowl game. If you beat the Crimson Tide, you might find yourself in the College Football Playoff.

Payton Thorne and the Tigers’ offense got the ball first after the opening kickoff, but didn’t stay on the field long. A three-and-out by the Tigers forced a quick punt to give Alabama the ball.

Alabama moved the ball well on its first drive of the game, but the drive was halted after Tide standout WR Ryan Williams caught a pass but then recovered a fumble that was recovered by the Tigers.

Because Auburn had the ball in good field position, it was able to advance into Alabama territory in just two plays. Then, on a 3rd & 8, Thorne Rivaldo found Fairweather for a 20-yard gain for the 22-year-old from Alabama. However, the Tigers were only able to move the ball one more yard on first, second and third downs, and then a missed 39-yard field goal by Ian Vachon stopped the drive completely for the Tigers down the field left with 0 points.

The two teams exchanged punts on their next drives, but that’s when Alabama came on the field late in the first quarter.

Jam Miller started the Tide’s drive with a 14-yard run to get the Tide near midfield. After a short pass and two more runs, Milroe led a 19-yard carry around the edge and into the end zone for the Tide’s first touchdown of the game.

Auburn quickly drove down the field and found itself in the red zone, but left the field with no points for the second time in the game after a 4th down pass from Payton Thorne fell incomplete.

Just like the Tigers, the Tide were in Auburn territory, but a pass from Jalen Milroe was intercepted at the Auburn 35-yard line, resulting in an Auburn field after a 9-play, 72-yard drive. Goal led 7-3 game.

After the Tigers’ field goal, Alabama embarked on a 12-play, 75-yard drive that resulted in a 1-yard touchdown run by Jalen Milroe, his second rushing TD of the game.

Auburn made another three-pointer on the next drive, but on the first play of Alabama’s next drive, Jalen Milroe was hit from behind and failed an Auburn recovery, making it the Tide’s third turnover of the first half.

Auburn started with the ball at the Alabama 34-yard line, looking to get into the end zone for the first time in the game.

After a 2nd down penalty on the Tide gave Auburn an automatic first down, Payton Thorne found Rivaldo Fairweather for a 14-yard gain to the Alabama 3-yard line.

After a 1-yard run on 1st-and-goal, Auburn was unable to get into the end zone on 2nd-and-3 due to big stops by the Crimson Tide defense, settling for a 25- Yard field goal.
