Alabama Power stops redevelopment of Powell Avenue Steam Plant and plans to sell land

After working for five years on a plan to redevelop Birmingham’s Powell Avenue Steam Generating Station into a multi-use commercial amusement facility, Alabama Power announced that the company had halted its redevelopment plans.

The announcement first came in 2019, when Alabama Power said it would convert the 120-year-old steam power plant into an area that would become a central gathering place in hopes of making Birmingham’s Parkside District more walkable.

Alabama Power released a statement saying:

After careful consideration and more than a decade of hard work, Alabama Power has halted plans to develop a multi-use commercial facility at the Powell Avenue Steam Plant and determined that Powell Avenue’s future should be led by a team with greater expertise in commercial development. Our goal is to focus on Alabama Power’s core business and serve our customers in the most reliable and affordable way possible. We will be listing the property for public sale to identify the best group to complete this project. We will do our best to ensure that the eventual buyer develops the property in a way that benefits Birmingham. We remain committed to making this historic landmark in the heart of the city something we can all be proud of for decades to come

Alabama Power says they will put the property up for sale to determine the best group to complete the project.
