Alabama’s earliest sunsets in 2024 are coming soon: If your city can see them at 5 p.m

The sun seems to set brutally early this time of year, especially in Alabama, which is on the east side of the Central Time Zone.

And the amount of daylight will continue to decrease in both Alabama and the entire Northern Hemisphere until the winter solstice on Saturday, December 21st. This is commonly referred to as the “shortest day of the year.”

Even though the solstice is just weeks away, Alabama is currently experiencing the earliest sunsets of 2024.

But that will soon change.

Sunset times will soon be a little later. For some places in Alabama, this could happen as early as Thursday.

However, in some areas you have to wait a few days.

Here’s a look at several Alabama cities, their earliest sunsets and when they occur.

* Auburn: 4:35 p.m. (November 30 – December 6)

* Birmingham: 4:38 p.m. (Dec 1 – Dec 5)

* Dothan: 4:38 p.m. (November 27 – December 7)

* Huntsville: 4:35 p.m. (November 27th – December 11th)

* Mobile: 4:50 p.m. (November 26th – December 8th)

* Montgomery: 4:39 p.m. (November 28th – December 7th)

* Tuscaloosa: 4:42 p.m. (November 29 – December 7)

Some will get a head start, but on December 11th all of Alabama will experience sunsets that arrive a little later. Nothing crazy, mind you, but a few seconds to minutes every day.

However, by the end of December, many places (except Mobile) will still not see sunsets after 5 p.m.

That won’t be the case until 2025. Here’s a look at when those sunsets will begin at 5 p.m.:

* Auburn: January 16

* Birmingham: January 13th

* Dothan: January 13th

* Huntsville: January 17th

* Mobile: December 29 (2024)

* Montgomery: January 12th

* Tuscaloosa: January 8th

Sunsets will take a big leap forward in March as Daylight Saving Time kicks in again. That will be on March 9th.
