Alexandria City High School bus driver charged with Oxon Hill murder

Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) said in an alert to parents that a bus driver was “placed on leave” immediately after being charged with murder.

ACPS said the bus driver in question was Carlas William Carter. Carter, 37, was arrested along with Alexandria resident Mary Ashby, 26, for the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Tamara Jones in Oxon Hill.

According to a release from the Prince George’s County Police Department:

On November 26, 2024, at approximately 2:45 a.m., officers responded to a shooting in the 6200 block of Oxon Hill Road in Oxon Hill. Officers found Jones in a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound. She died from her injuries on November 29, 2024.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects shot the victim during an argument. The suspects and the victim were known to each other.

Carter and Ashby are currently in custody.

ACPS says support is available to students and families to help students have a smooth transition as they get to know their new driver. According to the letter from Director of Student and Fleet Management MeChale’ Johnson:

I understand that this information is disturbing and if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact (email protected). If you believe your child needs additional support due to this matter, our student support team members are always available to support your student and family. Our team is dedicated to ensuring our students have a smooth transition as they meet their new driver. I encourage you to contact me or your child’s principal if you have any questions.
