Alleged Nintendo Switch 2 accessory leak hints at much larger console

Key insights

  • Some alleged Nintendo Switch 2 accessories were recently listed online.
  • The listings touting a carrying case and tempered glass screen protector both suggest that the Switch 2 will be significantly larger than its predecessor.
  • Nintendo has committed to officially unveiling the Switch 2 by March 31, 2025.

Several entries for supposedly Nintendo Switch 2 Accessories have surfaced online, suggesting the upcoming console will be significantly larger than its predecessor. This development adds to the growing body of evidence suggesting that mass production of the Switch successor has already begun.

Taiwanese supplier Weltrend Electronics has previously suggested that the Switch 2 could enter mass production by the end of September 2024. While it’s unclear whether this really happened, Nintendo’s most recent financial report shows an unusual increase in raw material inventories, suggesting that the company has actually begun mass assembly of something new. The complexity and diversity of global technology supply chains make it incredibly difficult to prevent leaks once consumer electronics enter mass production. That’s why details like the physical dimensions of new smartphones often surface online long before the official announcement, typically via third-party accessory listings.

Rumor: Production of the Switch 2 console could be ramping up

Some newly discovered delivery dates could indicate that Nintendo is speeding up mass production of its upcoming next-gen console, Switch 2.

Something similar may have just happened with the Switch 2, as several accessories rumored to be designed for Nintendo’s next console recently surfaced on 1688.com, an e-commerce platform owned by Chinese retail giant Alibaba Group. One of the items, first spotted by Famiboards user lanamoon, is a protective carrying case measuring 290 x 135 x 45mm that supposedly fits the Switch 2. For comparison, the original Switch model from 2017 measures 239 x 102 x 13.9 mm. Much of the depth of the newly listed case appears to be dedicated to padding. Even if the listing is based on the console’s actual dimensions, it’s highly unlikely that the Switch 2 is anywhere close to 45mm thick.

Nintendo Switch 2 may have a 15% larger screen than the Switch OLED model

The dimensions of the carrying case therefore suggest that the next Nintendo console will be significantly larger than the current generation console. This suggestion is in line with an analyst report from early 2024 that predicted the Switch 2 will have an 8-inch screen. Such a display would have a 15% longer diagonal compared to the 7-inch panel on the Switch OLED model.

Aside from this carrying case, a supposed tempered glass protector for the Switch 2 has also surfaced online. The images on the 1688.com store page contain comparisons with what appears to be equivalent Switch protection, which also suggests that the new console will be significantly larger. While it’s unclear whether these comparisons are made with a protective film for the original Switch or the OLED model, the latter seems more likely given the aforementioned theory of a 15% longer diagonal. All of this also seems to support recent rumors suggesting that the Switch 2’s dock will be significantly bulkier than its predecessor, perhaps to accommodate a larger console.

Nintendo has now stated twice that the Switch successor will be officially presented before the end of the 2024/25 financial year, which ends on March 31st. The release of the Switch 2 is therefore unlikely to take place until the second quarter of 2025 at the earliest and could well be a success until it hits the market much later.
