Ampere and STMicroelectronics are collaborating on a power box with long-term supply of silicon carbide

Power modules, consisting of numerous silicon carbide chips, manage and convert the electrical energy from the battery to drive the electric motor. They play a crucial role in the efficiency of the electric powertrain and battery range as well as the energy recovery functions, making them a key element in the efficiency of an electric car. They also contribute to the smoothness and responsiveness of driving.

STMicroelectronics and Ampere have collaborated on a power box to power Ampere’s new generation of electric motors. The Powerbox is designed for optimal power-to-size ratio across Ampere’s product range, both for electric vehicles with 400 volt battery and for segment C electric vehicles with 800 volt batteries, allowing greater autonomy and faster charging . 800 volts is one of the key levers to achieve fast charging from 10% to 80% in 15 minutes or less. This agreement is fully in line with Ampere’s strategy to dominate the entire electric vehicle value chain, especially by collaborating with its partners further upstream and ensuring the best efficiency at every step.

As an integrated device manufacturer (IDM), STMicroelectronics ensures quality and security of supply to support automakers’ electrification strategies. The collaboration with Ampere on the silicon carbide power modules and power box demonstrates STMicroelectronics’ leadership and system-level experience in advanced power electronics, including its packaging expertise.

Additional technical information

The Powerbox combines three SiC-based power modules, an excitation module that provides the motor or generator with the necessary electrical excitation to control the magnetic field in the rotor, and a cooling base plate that dissipates heat from the back of the power module, thereby improving thermal management and the cooling process can be simplified.
