Apple is asking for the installation for all users

Updated on April 18 with further details on the update, its content and its meaning.

A little more than two weeks ago, Apple IOS 18.4 started a large update with many new functions and corrections (more about how this update brought its own problems below). And now there is new information that has landed in relation to the place where the corrections are directed and the security problems treated here. The problems have already been exploited in real situations, which makes it an important update.

The news about a between the great publication of iOS 18.5 was a surprise when reports appeared last week.

Here it is: complete details about who it is, how you get it and what is in it.

Which iPhones can iOS 18.4.1 run?

All versions of iOS 18 will be compatible with iPhones from the iPhone XS from 2018. This means that the iPhone XS, the iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XR from this year and every iPhone afterwards both in the second and third generation models in the second and third generation. And all members of the iPhone 16 series are included up to the latest iPhone 16E.

How to get it

This is simplicity itself. Open the setting app, select in general, then software update. Then click download and installation and the software is downloaded. This is a small update, 570 MB on my iPhone 16 Pro Max. Mine took less than 10 minutes from clicking to download to complete installation.

What is in publication

This publication was a surprising publication, since the previous update, iOS 18.4, had landed two weeks ago on Monday, March 31 and had new functions and a number of security fixes (more than 60 of them).

It was assumed that the next publication IOS 18.5 would be, but things are not always going too plan, hence this smaller update.

Apple is with the exception of a specific: CarPlay in the content of the content. Apple says: “This update offers important error loops and security updates and deals with a rare problem that prevents the wireless car play connection in certain vehicles” in its version instructions.

The notes refer to the wireless car play – there was no problem if you put your iPhone inserted into the car by cable. And it is interesting that Apple says that the problem is rare. I had tried to reproduce it in several cars without success.

However, if you got into your car to start CarPlay as usual and were unable to connect, this is a great headache as rarely. Especially if you rely on your iPhone for satellite navigation, for example.

In the update notes, “error deposits and safety updates” are also given. These are due to two safety errors, both of which are part of the urgency of the update, since they are used in real attacks.

The first of these security errors affects the Coreaaudio in the iPhone, which says that the processing of an audio stream, if it comes from a malicious source, can lead to a code execution. The company commented on this. “Apple is aware that this problem may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against certain targeted people on iOS,” says his support page.

Assume that the topic has concentrated on certain people, probably journalists, politicians, government officials, etc. The longer the error existed, the greater the probability that the focus of the attacks could be expanded.

Apple says a problem with storage corruption to solve the problem.

The second error concerns the RPAC, i.e. the pointer authentication code, a safety function that prevents the attacker from manipulating code. It is another zero-day fixed susceptibility to security that aims at certain targeted people. When used, this security measure would be avoiding reading and writing skills.

Both problems can also affect some iPads, Apple TV boxes, Macs and even the Apple Vision Pro. Updates for each of these were published at the same time as iOS 18.4.1.
