Arch Manning only needs one touch to make a big impact in the Texas vs. Texas A&M battle

It took just one play for college football’s most famous backup quarterback to make his presence felt as the Texas-Texas A&M rivalry reignited.

When the Longhorns and Aggies faced off for the first time in 13 years on Saturday, it wasn’t starting quarterback Quinn Ewers but backup Arch Manning who found the end zone first for Texas.

Ewers, who was questionable the week before the game with an ankle injury, was cleared to play Saturday night, but it was Manning whose number was decided on a Longhorns fourth-and-2 deep in Aggie territory in a scoreless game the first quarter.

Manning had not yet entered the field, but he immediately took the ball on a read option, broke a tackle during a 15-yard run and hit the pylon to score the game’s first touchdown and give the Longhorns an early touchdown lead.

Manning was originally thought to have gone out of bounds at the one-yard line, but after an extensive replay of the play, it was determined that he touched the pylon in the in-bounds area and therefore scored the touchdown. The Longhorns maintained their 7-0 lead into the second quarter.

It will be Manning’s first on-field action since Texas’ Nov. 9 victory over Florida, as Ewers was the focal point throughout the games at Arkansas and Kentucky. It was Manning’s fourth touchdown run of the season, with the freshman rushing for 96 yards on 18 carries. He has rushed for 939 yards and nine touchdowns this season.

The winner of the Longhorns-Aggies matchup will go to the SEC Championship Game and face Georgia.
