Arctic air means several freezing nights and chilly days ahead

December comes with another cold snap for Alabama. The next few mornings will be the coldest of the season. Check the video forecast for the latest updates.

SUNDAY

Gradual warming will bring high temperatures into the low and mid 50s Sunday afternoon, followed by a return to below freezing temperatures this evening.

The temperature will fall about 10 degrees below average in early December.

COLDER TUESDAY

On Monday, a weak cold front will be followed by another push of arctic air into Alabama. The strong arctic high will allow below freezing temperatures through Wednesday morning.

Strong northwesterly flow will reach lows in the 20s Tuesday morning, followed by highs in the lower 40s north to lower 50s south.

FAST CHANGES

After highs in the 40s, there will be a “warm-up” midweek before another arctic front arrives. By Wednesday afternoon, winds will become increasingly westerly as cloud cover increases.

A low pressure system will sweep across the Great Lakes on Wednesday, bringing another cold front and possible rain to Alabama. Moisture return appears to be limited, meaning rainfall totals may not be impressive. Still, a few showers are possible starting Wednesday night and spreading across the state by Thursday morning.

There will be light rain, with most locations receiving less than half an inch of rainfall. The front will descend south into the Gulf of Mexico as high pressure builds from Canada. There will be a colder air mass through the weekend with highs in the low 50s.
