Arctic air means several freezing nights and chilly days ahead

SUNDAYA gradual warming will bring high temperatures into the low and mid 50s Sunday afternoon, followed by a return to below freezing temperatures this evening. The temperature will fall about 10 degrees below average in early December. COLDER TUESDAY Another burst of arctic air will follow a weak cold front in Alabama on Monday. The strong arctic high will allow below freezing temperatures through Wednesday morning. Strong northwesterly flow will reach lows in the 20s Tuesday morning, followed by highs in the lower 40s north to lower 50s south. RAPID CHANGES Highs in the 40s will be followed by a “warm-up” of another Arctic front midweek. Winds will shift to the west as cloud cover increases Wednesday afternoon. A low pressure system will sweep across the Great Lakes on Wednesday, bringing another cold front and the chance of rain to Alabama. Moisture return appears to be limited, meaning rainfall totals may not be impressive. Still, a few showers are possible starting Wednesday night and spreading across the state by Thursday morning. Rain will be light, with most locations receiving less than half an inch of precipitation. The front will descend south into the Gulf of Mexico as high pressure builds from Canada. There will be a colder air mass through the weekend with highs in the low 50s.
