Arctic Blast brings closures and delays to Laredo

LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – A strong arctic blast expected next week is causing changes to school and office schedules in Laredo and Webb County.

Government offices

Webb County offices will remain closed Tuesday, January 21, 2025 due to the risk of icy roads. The emergency service remains open. Updates will be posted on county social media. Offices will reopen on Wednesday, January 22nd, but vehicle transfers will not be possible.

Schools

Webb Consolidated ISD has announced an early release for Monday, January 20th:

  • Oilton Elementary School: Noon.
  • Bruni Middle School & High School: 12:30 p.m

There will be no classes on Tuesday, January 21st and Wednesday, January 22nd. All extracurricular activities, sporting events and credit recovery classes are canceled. The regular schedule will resume on Thursday, January 23rd. Officials will closely monitor the weather and provide updates as necessary.

United ISD Regular hours will be in effect on Monday, January 20, but all extracurricular activities will be canceled. The district will close on Tuesday and reopen on Wednesday with a two-hour delayed start.

Laredo ISD will pursue a similar plan. Monday will be a normal school day, but classes will be canceled on Tuesday, which is now a “bad weather day.” LISD reopens Wednesday with delayed start times:

  • Elementary school: 9:30 a.m
  • Middle schools: 10:00 a.m
  • High schools: 10:30 a.m

Zapata County ISD Regular classes will be held on Monday, January 20th, but classes will be canceled on Tuesday, January 21st. All courses with a delayed start will resume on Wednesday. ZCISD says all employees are also two hours late. Bus pickup begins at 8:30 a.m. for all schools. The delayed start times are as follows:

  • Elementary school: 9:40 a.m
  • Middle schools: 9:45 a.m
  • High schools: 10:00 a.m

Harmony Public Schools is closed Monday for MLK Day and Tuesday due to freezing weather.

Catholic schools such as Mary Help, St. Augustine and Blessed Sacrament will be closed Monday for MLK Day. Tuesday is a virtual learning day and Wednesday starts two hours late.

United Day School will have regular classes on Monday. The school will be closed on Tuesday and the missed day will be made up later. Classes resume as usual on Wednesday at 7:55 a.m

Universities

Laredo College Operations will continue as usual on Monday, January 20th. Both campuses will be closed on Tuesday, January 21st and all activities, classes and services will be cancelled. Classes resume on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m

TAMIU will be closed on Tuesday, January 21st due to forecasted freezing temperatures. The offices are already closed on Monday for MLK Day. Normal operations and classes will resume at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday

City Services

City of Laredo offices will be closed Monday for MLK Day and Tuesday due to inclement weather. Garbage collection will continue as planned. On Tuesday, El Metro buses will operate a shorter schedule from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Normal opening hours return on Wednesday.

Residents are urged to stay updated via official websites and social media as more information becomes available.

Additional closures

On Monday, January 20, two different companies contacted KGNS with information about closures and delayed starts. It is recommended to check with them on social media for further updates on their operating hours. The schedules are listed below:

  • All IBC branches in Laredo will be open Tuesday, January 21st at 12:00 p.m.
  • The South Texas Food Bank will be open Tuesday, January 21st at 12:00 p.m.
