ASU football is picking up major Big 12 honors — and perhaps a major snub

The Big 12 announced its football honors, and although Arizona State has a strong presence, the player most thought would make it was snubbed.

Colorado, which didn’t even make it to the championship game, secured both player honors: quarterback Shedeur Sanders was named Offensive Player of the Year and Travis Hunter was named Defensive Player of the Year. ASU running back Cam Skattebo did not receive that top honor, but was named to the first team.

Sun Devils coach Kenny Dillingham was named Coach of the Year, which seemed like an easy decision as he turned a 3-9 team into a 10-2 team that played in the conference title game. Also for ASU, freshman quarterback Sam Leavitt was named Offensive Freshman of the Year, while sophomore wide receiver Jordyn Tyson was named Offensive Freshman of the Year.

Tyson, who suffered a season-ending shoulder injury last Saturday, had 75 catches for 1,101 yards and 10 touchdowns. In the final three games of the regular season, he had 29 catches for 444 yards and three touchdowns. Tyson also finished the season second in the Big 12 in touchdown catches and third in receiving yards.

Leavitt was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week three times this season, so he seemed like a good choice for postseason honors. ASU was 10-1 in games Leavitt started as he completed 62.7% of his passes for 2,444 yards and 21 touchdowns with just five interceptions.

First team selections included Skattebo, Tyson, center Leif Fautanu and safety Xavion Alford. Second-team honorees included Leavitt, tight end Chamon Metayer, defensive lineman CJ Fite and linebacker Keyshaun Elliott.
