At TGL, players worked together to align the schedule with the start of the PGA Tour season

PALM BEACH GARDENS – It was a challenge to fit the schedule for TGL’s inaugural season into the start of the PGA Tour season.

The league, which includes 24 PGA Tour players, had to consider the tour schedule and its players’ travel — particularly early in the season — before announcing the 15 games that will be played at SoFi Center.

“One thing that has been talked about for some time is how to fit this with the PGA Tour schedule,” Billy Horschel said. “The players had to talk about which events they would and wouldn’t participate in.

“So we worked hard to create a schedule that works for everyone. Some may have it a little more difficult.”

The technology-driven league created by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy makes its debut Tuesday at 9 p.m. when New York takes on The Bay. Each team consists of four PGA Tour players, with three active in each game.

New York, whose entire team lives in the Jupiter area, will use Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele and Matt Fitzpatrick on Tuesday. The Bay activated Shane Lowry, Wyndham Clark and Ludvig Aberg from Jupiter.

Cameron Young (New York) and Min Woo Lee (Bayern) will not play in their teams’ first game.

“Anything that’s thrown at us at any point in the season messes everything up, so it’s definitely an extra layer as far as the schedule goes,” Young said. “But we will make sure it works.”

With games taking place on Mondays and Tuesdays, TGL has partnered with ONEflight International to offer private jet travel for players who need to get to and from PGA Tour events quickly.

Schauffele, Fitzpatrick, Clark and Aberg were in Hawaii over the weekend and played at Sentry at Kapalua Resort. They flew together to Palm Beach County for Tuesday’s season opener.

“There will be some potential conflicts just because it starts with the West Coast Swing,” Fowler said. “I know my schedule says maybe a week, but other than that, I think they’ve done a really good job of looking at everyone’s potential schedules.

“They are working closely with our teams and the players to ensure it does not impact our normal preparation or tour life.”

TGL features a roster of top local PGA Tour players as substitutes

TGL is prepared if a team’s roster is impacted by travel issues or injuries. The league has a list of top local PGA Tour players who have joined as backup players and are ready to step in when a team needs a backup player. This list has not been published.

Following this week’s event in Honolulu, the next five weeks of tour stops will be in California and Arizona.

The TGL season ends as the tour celebrates its Florida swing. Of the 24 players on the TGL roster, 11 live in northern Palm Beach County.

“Most people live here, either in Jupiter or parts of Florida, so it’s not that far,” said Wyndham, who lives in Scottsdale, Arizona. “They tried to plan most of the schedule around us playing in Florida, so it’s just a one-way drive or flight.”

“But still, the nice thing about it is that planes are fast and we’re used to traveling.”

TGL has no games scheduled during the weeks of the Genesis Invitational and Players Championship. And the season ends before the Masters.

Travel is one reason McIlroy’s Boston Common Golf doesn’t debut until the fourth week of the season. McIlroy will defend his title at the Dubai Desert Classic from January 16-19.

But when Boston plays its first game on Jan. 27, it will be against Woods’ Jupiter Links, the league’s founders.

Woods will make his TGL debut on January 14th in a game against Los Angeles.

Tom Kim is part of Woods’ team and spoke with the 15-time major champion about how he has dealt with various challenges throughout his career, including scheduling.

“That was a big thing for him, to become the best player in the world despite those situations,” Kim said. “It was kind of an adjustment and proof that aside from going through all that, it also gave him an advantage that he could go out there and still win.”

“I’m going to try to use that mentality to use everything to my advantage.”
