Auburn jumps to No. 2, Alabama is one behind in the current AP Top 25

(WTVY) – Fresh off a hugely successful week on the floor in the Aloha State, the Auburn Tigers were knocking on the door to the top spot in the latest AP Top 25 men’s basketball rankings released Monday .

Auburn (7-0) landed at No. 2 in the Dec. 2 rankings, moving up two spots from the previous week after going on a 3-0 run to clinch the program’s first Maui Invitational title.

The Tigers received 26 first-place votes, only nine such votes behind the top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks (7-0), who remained steady at No. 1, as they have done all season, with 35 first-place votes received.

The preseason No. 2 team, the Alabama Crimson Tide (6-2), slipped one spot from No. 9 to No. 10 in the latest AP poll. The Tide had a good run at the Players Era Festival. With an 85-80 overtime win over No. 6 Houston (4-3) and a narrow 95-90 win over Rutgers (5-3), they would win the tournament title We couldn’t get past the 83:81 loss against Oregon (8:0) on Saturday in a year. The Ducks entered the latest rankings at No. 12 following their own undefeated streak in the Players Era Tournament.

The SEC takes three of the top four spots in the latest rankings, with Tennessee (7-0) and Kentucky (7-0) each moving up four spots to sit just behind Auburn at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. In total, there are eight SEC teams currently ranked, with No. 13 Florida, No. 21 Oklahoma, No. 22 Texas A&M and No. 23 Ole Miss joining the Tigers, Volunteers, Wildcats and Crimson Tide.

The Tigers and Tide will both be back in action on Wednesday in the 2024 ACC-SEC Challenge, with Auburn set to face No. 9 Duke (5-2) at 8:15 p.m. while Alabama travels to Chapel Hill to face No. 9 to fight. 20 North Carolina (4-3) at 6:15 p.m
