Can the Tigers maintain their momentum against the Tide?

Auburn edged Texas A&M in a four-overtime thriller last Saturday when QB Payton Thorne connected with WR KeAndre Lambert-Smith on a two-point play to secure the victory. The Tigers led 21-0 early, but the Aggies fought back and matched the home team blow for blow. Ultimately, they didn’t have enough to beat Auburn, which had blown double-digit leads against both Oklahoma and Missouri.

“My feelings are hard to put into words right now,” Thorne said. “I’m still aiming so high. It was great. I didn’t know if they were going to storm the field or not and I turned around and a fan slapped me in the face and I was like, ‘Whoa, that’s pretty sweet.’ It was great.”

The senior Thorne leads Auburn’s passing game with 2,412 yards, 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He completed 63.4 percent of his passes, averaging 8.7 yards per pass. Thorne’s top receiving targets are Lambert-Smith (42 receptions for 865 yards and eight touchdowns) and freshman WR Cam Coleman (30 receptions for 520 yards and seven touchdowns). The Tigers’ running game is dominated by senior RB Jarquez Hunter (174 carries for 1,145 yards and eight scores).

Auburn averages 29.0 points (60th) and 432.2 total yards (31st), including 260.5 passing yards (34th) and 171.6 rushing yards (54th). It has allowed 58 tackles for loss (57th) and committed 20 turnovers (114th). The Tigers converted 41.0 percent of their third downs (56) and scored on 72.4 percent of their trips to the red zone (125).

The defense gives up 20.7 points (30th) and a total of 319.6 yards (24th) per game, including 209.1 passing yards (51st) and 110.5 rushing yards (20th). They lost 61 tackles (68th) and forced nine turnovers (126th). Auburn’s opponents convert 39.0 percent of their third-down attempts (64th) and score on 80.0 percent of their red zone trips (33rd).

Alabama is in a vulnerable position after last week’s performance

Alabama was upset by Oklahoma last weekend, losing by 21 points as a favorite with a 13.5-point spread. The Sooners defeated the Crimson Tide 325-234, forcing three turnovers on defense. Bama had 70 rushing yards on 30 attempts (2.3 YPC) in the impressive loss.

“Obviously extremely disappointed and frustrated,” Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer said. “We worked extremely hard all week, I thought.” Put a plan together… Good energy. I’m happy to come here. We have to play better. We have to get better in every way.”

Junior QB Jalen Milroe leads the Crimson Tide with 2,396 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and nine picks. He also ran for 615 yards and scored 17 points to lead the Alabama game. Milroe’s top receiver targets are freshman WR Ryan Williams (42 receptions for 804 yards and eight touchdowns) and junior WR Germie Bernard (39 receptions for 603 yards and two touchdowns).

Auburn vs. Alabama Prediction: The point total will be under 53 in Saturday’s NCAAF Iron Bowl showdown in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama will lean heavily on Milroe and his legs against the Tigers. This has been the case in the last five games, as the lower team lost 4-1 there. Like Bama, Auburn likes to rely on Hunter to produce yards, which has resulted in four unders in the Tigers’ last six games. Considering Auburn hasn’t played a game with such a high point total since Week 4, it’s unlikely that this rivalry matchup will result in a high score. I expect the Tide to take an early lead and crush the visitors with their ground game, winning and covering while dominating time of possession.

Prediction: Below 52.5
