Australia vs India: Sam Konstas scores half-century on debut to put hosts on top

One of the pictures of the day showed Kohli, 36, running into Konstas after the Australian tossed the Indian bowlers around the ground.

Kohli appeared to change direction to make contact with Konstas, who walked down the pitch to speak to his opening batting partner Khawaja.

Speaking to Seven Network presenter, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting said Kohli was probably to blame.

“This man (Kohli) may need to answer a few questions,” Ponting said.

“When you are out there batting, the batsman owns the wicket. The goal area belongs to him. Especially between overs like that.”

Konstas played down the incident at the end of the day, saying: “I was just putting my gloves on and I think he accidentally bumped into me. But that’s just cricket, the excitement.”

The International Cricket Council can suspend players for “inappropriate physical contact” if it is serious enough. However, it is not yet clear whether any of the players will face further action.

The incident summed up a sobering day for India, who became visibly frustrated as the Australian top order found form together.

But this late onslaught of wickets, led by the irrepressible Bumrah, pulled the visitors back into the game.

Labuschagne appeared to be in a good position to reach three figures before he attacked spinner Washington Sundar, who was recalled in place of Shubman Gill, and played the ball straight to Kohli in the middle.

Travis Head, who had scored two centuries in his last three innings, headed for a duck after shouldering his arms for a Bumrah delivery that bounced back and clipped the top of his off-stump.

Two overs later, Marsh attempted a lob over the line but could only get through to Carey for Bumrah’s third wicket of the day and the 24th of the series.

Deep then made the most of a late shot with the new ball and delivered a beautiful shot that stretched Carey’s edge.
