“Bachelor Party” by Tom Hanks: another hard-to-find 80s classic

Bachelor Party is definitely the raciest movie Tom Hanks has ever appeared in, but this R-rated comedy classic is hard to find these days.

Bachelor party film

There’s a scene from the 1984s Bachelor party perfectly sums up how stupid – and hilarious – the film is. This involves a cocaine overdose by a donkey. Not because anyone gave the donkey cocaine, mind you. No, it’s the decision of the donkey, who saunters over to a table full of drugs, chops up a few snakes with his hoof and goes to town. He then dies of a massive heart attack. A cautionary tale, to be sure. If you haven’t seen it yet Bachelor party And if this joke seems particularly distasteful, you probably don’t need to track this movie down because it doesn’t get any more classic than that.

But for a generation of us Bachelor party was a late night sleepover classic. It was like the Hangover of the 1980s, although not such a big hit. It’s the raciest film Tom Hanks has ever made. He plays a young man about to get married (to the late Tawny Kitaen, just before she was immortalized by Whitesnake), whose idiot friends throw him the bachelor party to end all bachelor parties.

Bachelor party came out shortly afterwards Squirt made Hanks a star, and given the family he had gained for this film, he decided to take a more elegant path in the future than Bachelor party could have pointed this out. Basically, instead of being the next Robert Carradine (star of Revenge of the Nerds), he became the popular icon we know today.

As such, Bachelor party has taken a bit of a backseat in his filmography, but it’s worth noting that the film made money ($38 million in 1984) and was a staple on VHS and cable television. During the DVD era the film actually became popular again, there was even a DTV sequel that no one watched, and a remake almost happened. But in recent years, this film has become frustratingly difficult to find…unless you live in Canada. It doesn’t appear to be streaming anywhere in the US, but in Canada, ironically given the film’s content, it’s actually streaming on Disney Plus. Yes – a movie in which a donkey overdoses on cocaine is streaming on Disney Plus (thank goodness!).

How ransom And DutchIt doesn’t look like there is a specific agenda Bachelor party withdrawn from circulation. You can find plenty of DVD copies on Amazon, even if they are out of print, as tons of them were made during the second wave of popularity in the 2000s. Still, it’s the kind of film that begs for a special release from a label like Arrow because it would be hilarious to see some of the film’s stars, like Hanks and Michael Dudikoff (the American Ninja), who made his debut here. It kind of points to a problem Dutch And ransomThe rights belong to Disney (made by 20th Century Fox), who have bigger fish to fry. I understand that they don’t want to remake a film like this Bachelor partybut it would be nice if they were more aggressive about licensing their films to indie labels like I think they should be with a film Bachelor party (or Johnny dangerous) would sell well.

What do you think? Should Disney open the floodgates and release some MIA classics? Let us know in the comments!
