Belleville Receives Sustainable Jersey Recognition: “Cleaner and More Environmentally Friendly”

BELLEVILLE, NJ – Belleville has secured bronze certification for sustainable jersey, officials recently announced.

Certified cities were announced at the New Jersey State League of Municipalities conference in Atlantic City.

For Bronze certification, a municipality must submit documentation demonstrating that it has completed an audit of the program’s sustainability measures, achieving at least 150 points.

For the 2024 Sustainable Jersey application cycle, seven cities in Essex County achieved the Bronze or Silver level. Almost 83 percent of the state municipalities participate in the program.

According to a community press release:

“Belleville is committed to making the community cleaner and greener, whether by encouraging residents to grow fresh fruits and vegetables in the community garden or by organizing the annual Green Fair in September. The Belleville Municipal Green Team plays an active role in Belleville year-round by giving away free plants at the Pocket Park on Division Avenue in July, distributing free seedlings in honor of Arbor Day, and hosting community events throughout the year.”

“On behalf of the Belleville Municipal Green Team, we are very proud of our Bronze certification,” said Mayor Michael Melham.

“It shows that sustainability, energy efficiency and recycling are not just buzzwords in Belleville,” Melham added. “They are ideals that guide us when we make this city even better every day.”
