Big Ten teams in updated coaches and AP polls

With Ohio State competing in the College Football Playoff championship game, the Big Ten is finding itself in a plethora of headlines across the country.

The same goes for the conference’s basketball teams.

After No. 19 Michigan pulled off a 94-75 upset over then-No. 22 UCLA at Pauley Pavilion, a historically difficult venue for an away team to win, scolded Bruins coach Mick Cronin after the game, calling his team “soft” and “delusional.” Vladislav Goldin finished the win with a career-high 36 points for the Wolverines.

By the end of the week, things wouldn’t improve for either UCLA or Cronin. Cronin was ejected in the second half of the Bruins’ 79-61 road loss to Maryland after arguing with one of the referees over a foul. UCLA has lost three straight since beating No. 14 Gonzaga at the Intuit Dome on Dec. 28.

Illinois suffered its second setback in conference play on Saturday after losing 82-72 to USC at home at State Farm Center. It’s the first signature win for Eric Musselman’s Trojans, while the Illini were without starting point guard Kasparas Jakucionis for the second straight game.

Michigan State had a stress-free week with convincing wins against Washington and Northwestern to move up to No. 12. Tom Izzo’s team is 5-0 and is undefeated at the top of the Big Ten standings for the first time since the 2021-22 season. The Spartans have also rattled off nine straight wins since losing to Memphis at the Maui Invitational on Nov. 26.

Elsewhere, Oregon and Wisconsin won both games this week. The Ducks defeated Ohio State and Penn State on the road, while the Badgers picked up wins over Rutgers and Minnesota.
