Black bears find a special treat in the fallen tree – straight out of a cartoon

Located in New Orleans, Louisiana, the Audubon Nature Institute is home to a variety of animals, including some black bears that recently found a large treat in a fallen tree. Audubon shared the video on Friday, October 11th and it’s straight out of a cartoon!

A nearly 200-year-old tree in the bear enclosure fell after damage from Hurricane Ida. When arborists attempted to remove the tree, they discovered there were beehives inside and beekeepers were called to remove them. Watch as the bears enjoy what the bees left behind – a large honeycomb!

I loved watching the bear stick his paw into the branch to dig up the honey! It totally reminded me of Winnie the Pooh eating out of a honey jar! The bears were all having their best lives and enjoying a treat that they probably don’t get that often. Audubon fans also enjoyed watching the bears eat the honey. @Shush shared: “I love this! You get the honeycomb and the bees get a safer new home. Happy, curious, sticky bears LOL!” Commenter @Dani wasn’t wrong when she pointed out: “Sorry you lost the tree, but it’s just a happy accident for the bears!”

Interesting facts about black bears

Black bears are large, but are actually the smallest of the bear species found in the Americas. Brown bears (also known as grizzly bears) and polar bears are both larger, but that doesn’t mean black bears are small. These bears grow 4 to 6 feet long and can weigh between 150 and 650 pounds. Males standing on their hind legs can grow to over 7 feet tall! Even though they are the smallest bears, the last thing you want to do is try to play with them!

In the wild, they eat fruits, nuts, plants and honey, as well as insects such as ants and bees. If possible, they also hunt for fish. Fact Animal explained that black bears love berries and can eat up to 10,000 a day! “They have an excellent sense of smell, which helps them locate pick berries, nuts and fruits, as well as hives where they feed on honey and bee larvae.” From Audubon’s video, we know that they are big honey fans too!

According to Mashed, there’s a reason why bears love honey. Alaska Department of Fish and Game Educator Elizabeth Manning explains that honey is an important food source for bears: “Unlike in ‘Winnie the Pooh,’ the bears eat more than just honey. They also eat the bees and larvae in the hive, which are a good source of protein.”

And don’t worry about the bears getting stung while they raid the bee home. Bears do get stung, but it doesn’t bother them because they have thick fur to protect themselves. I’m sure it’s no more than just a pinch for them!
