Black Friday is becoming “Black Ice Friday” as there have been 150 car accidents, according to the Michigan State Police

Hopefully your Friday night wasn’t ruined by being stuck on an icy Detroit-area highway for several hours. Black ice during the holidays caused several accidents among several dozen drivers.

Several days after Friday’s storm brought highway traffic to a standstill for hours, FOX 2 saw the battle scars of the dozens of ice-related crashes, including missing front bumpers and torn off grilles, broken axles and missing headlights.

Drake’s collision manager Jacquelyn Sawicki showed FOX 2 the parking lot full of damaged cars and said it was a busy Monday both outside and inside.

“To be honest, that’s average. We definitely had it more crowded,” she said. “I think we got over 30 cars over the holiday weekend alone. We had black ice, so all the highways were crazy because I was in them. So I had first hand experience. So I saw all the accidents and stuff like that. So I.” I knew it was going to be a pretty crazy weekend.

According to Michigan State Police, the first major snowfall of the season caused more than 150 accidents as Black Friday began Black ice Friday.

Local insurance agencies are still reviewing claims. State Farm’s David Arce said the holiday weekend is a reminder to add collision coverage to your insurance if you haven’t already.

“If you’re on an icy road and there are no other cars disturbing you or affecting your driving, you’ll just slip on black ice or an icy road that’s covered in a collision,” he said.

Sawicki wants drivers to work patiently to get any damaged car back on the road.

“I always ask everyone: Are you OK? Is the driver okay? Because that’s the most important thing,” she said. “I wish I could snap my fingers, and I will do whatever it takes as long as it is in our power. But I’ll let them know that it’s quite a process. Sometimes we have to wait for insurance companies. Sometimes we waited for approvals.

If you get into a pileup or accident during a winter storm, do not exit your car unless you are in immediate danger. Also, check your insurance coverage to make sure you have a rental car policy.
