Bob Melvins SF Giants Co-Closer Experiment meets the first bump on the street

The SF giants are rolling to start the 2025 campaign. A large part of her success was the strength of her bullpen. Manager Bob Melvin, however, has to rethink his 9th Inning-Co-Closer experiment.

So far, Melvin Ryan Walker and Camilo Doval has used Save situations to start the year. Part of it was that Walker was not available in some games like in Cincinnati when he had to do with rear views. Melvin said that Walker was not available against the Seattle Mariners in the game on Sunday, which seemed to be more because Walker had put up the two previous games as any kind of injuries.

That is why Doval got the ball in an inlet game in the 9th. He blew the rescue, but luckily only gave up the one run that made it possible for the Giants to end the game in the 9th by bringing a run over the plate for their second walk-off victory in three games.

The excursion on Sunday was the worst doval, who looked so far this season. He gave up two goals and gave two walks, the first two free passes that he had given up this season. He managed to escape a run from the 9th only, but the excursion remembered the Wild -Dval, which we had got used to for the last season.

In 2024, Doval had a career of 4.88 ERA in 59 Innings. He converted 23 of his 28 Save chances, but largely lost Walker the narrower role because he had not consistently found the strike zone. He went 39 Batters in these 59 Innerings, which is simply not sustainable.

In spring training this year he did a better job to throw strikes, and the first excursion of the regular season. He looked more like the doval of 2022 and 2023, which was one of the elite strokes in the game and earned an all-star nod.

The prospect of having a kind of co-close situation with Doval and Walker who praised the opponents this season as options to exclude games became a pronounced opportunity, but maybe we should make this dream of braking for a second.

This is just a bad excursion for Doval, who ultimately did not cost the team. However, he really has to prove that his control has improved since last year before Melvin can really trust him to make close games. Doval has already recorded two parades this season, but both had a more comfortable 3-run-9. Inning leadership.

Perhaps Melvin can use a somewhat unorthodox co-closer arrangement where the walker comes in when the team has a lead or two in the 9th Inning, while Doval comes in when the leadership is three or four. In this way, Melvin still preserves the arm of Walker after using the hard -knocked right in 2024 for 80 innings of work. Managing the workload of Bullpen arms is important, and this type of system can ensure that nobody is burned too far, especially early in the season. Of course, this can be difficult if the Giants have several one-run games in a row, but it could be an interesting thing to try.

The fact that the Giants have two legitimate closer options is a plus, but we have to see how Melvin uses his late Inning weapons during the season.
