Body of teenager exhumed as part of murder investigation involving police officer

Sragen, Central Java. The body of 16-year-old Gamma Rizkynata Oktafansy was exhumed by Central Java police on Friday as part of an investigation into allegations that a police officer fatally shot the student.

The exhumation took place at a public cemetery in Karangmalam area of Sragen district. Workers dismantled the grave’s concrete platform and ceramic covering while a Muslim cleric led prayers. Provincial police forensic teams conducted the procedure under strict supervision.

The body, wrapped in a shroud, was examined on one of two wooden tables placed next to the open grave. Buckets of water and other forensic equipment could be seen at the crime scene.

The grave was marked off with black cloths during the operation.

Gamma, a student of Semarang 4th Government Vocational School, was reportedly shot dead by a police officer near the Paramount Housing Complex in West Semarang last weekend.

According to initial police information, the officer claimed that he was on his way home when he witnessed a youth gang fighting. The officer claimed he tried to intervene but was met with resistance, which led to him opening fire. Police described Gamma as a gang member, a claim that sparked widespread criticism and public outrage.

Nanang Agus, a counselor at Gamma’s school, denied the allegations, describing Gamma as a bright, hard-working student who had no history of violence. He was also an active member of the school’s flag-raising team.

The officer, identified as 2nd Sub-Inspector R, has been charged with murder in connection with the incident.

Although devastated, Gamma’s family supported the exhumation to reveal the truth about his death.

“If they have to exhume his body for justice, we accept it,” Siman, Gamma’s grandfather, said near the gravesite.

Siman remembered Gamma as a respectful and obedient grandson who always returned home during Eid and school holidays. When the family received Gamma’s body last week, they only looked at his face in the coffin and did not examine the rest of his body.
