As winter weather sets in, many drivers prepare for the season by equipping their vehicles with emergency supplies and swapping summer tires for winter tires. An often overlooked part of preparing for winter driving is ensuring car seats are installed correctly. To help families prepare for the season, the Bozeman Fire Department will host free car seat checks on Tuesday, December 3 and Friday, December 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Fire Station 1 (300 E. Oak St.).

Winter driving conditions present unique challenges, from icy roads to limited visibility. Properly installed car seats can significantly improve a child’s safety in the event of a collision or sudden stop. These free inspections provide parents and caregivers the opportunity to have car seats inspected for proper installation and fit by Bozeman Fire’s certified child safety technicians.

“This isn’t just an installation service – it’s an educational opportunity,” said Deputy Chief Scott Mueller. “Our technicians will walk you through the process so you can safely install your child’s car seat yourself.”

Chief Mueller has led Bozeman Fire’s child safety program for over two decades. Under his leadership, he has trained over 300 certified car seat technicians in Montana, helping to keep countless children safe on Montana roads.

“With four out of five seats installed incorrectly, these controls are critical to a safer community,” Mueller said.

In addition to safety inspections, Bozeman Fire will offer a limited offering of convertible, station wagon and booster seats to eligible families.

The events are free and open to the public. No appointment is necessary, but families are encouraged to arrive early as each inspection lasts approximately 20 minutes. If individuals are unable to attend either event, they may also contact Bozeman Fire to schedule a free car seat inspection by appointment.
