BREAK | Notre Dame fellow Virginia grad transfer WR Malachi Fields

Notre Dame has officially opened the transfer portal as graduate transfer Malachi Fields from Virginia has committed to play his senior year for the Fighting Irish.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder is one of the best purebred athletes in the country and it would be hard to find a more productive receiver in the transfer portal as Fields has topped 800 yards rushing in consecutive seasons.

In 2024, Fields recorded 55 catches for 808 yards and five scores, after recording 58 receptions for 811 yards and five touchdowns in 2023. Fields will finish his Virginia career with 129 receptions for 1,849 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Against Notre Dame in November, Fields recorded four receptions for 81 yards.

Fields also landed at No. 66 on Bruce Feldman’s Freak List over the summer as the Virginia native put up some ridiculous testing numbers. The Irish get a receiver who lifted 365 pounds on the tight-grip bench and did 21 reps at 225. Fields also recorded a 355 front squat, 38-inch vertical, 10-7 ½ broad jump, 4.18 shuttle and flip 22 mph on GPS.

At boundary receiver, Fields expects things could be a bit tight for the Irish as Beaux Collins will max out his eligibility while Deion Colzie and Jayden Thomas have decisions to make in their final year. Freshman Micah Gilbert retained his redshirt, while incoming freshman Jerome Bettis Jr. could end up on the perimeter.

Fields is the second transfer to land at Notre Dame, joining Alabama defensive back DeVonta Smith.
