Breaking news: Granlund goes to the four-nation duel, Eklund doesn’t make it

Mikael Granlund goes international.

Granlund will represent Finland at the 4-Nation Face-Off in Boston and Montreal in February.

At the moment, Granlund appears to be the only representative of the San Jose Sharks in this international best-of-the-best tournament.

The United States and Canada are also participating in the competition and will announce their rosters on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. PT, but no Sharks are expected to be added to their rosters.

Granlund, 32, has been a fixture in international play for Finland, most recently captaining Suomi at the 2024 World Cup. The centerman is enjoying another strong season for the Sharks, leading the team with 10 goals (tied with Tyler Toffoli) and 19 Assists and 29 points. He was also San Jose’s pacesetter in those categories last year.

Granlund will join 2024 Stanley Cup winner Aleksander Barkov in Finland.

San Jose Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky has been effusive in his praise of his top centerman all season, recently saying, “He’s been one of our best players all season.” Most consistent guys. Knows the game. He’s smart, a really good professional. Helps the younger ones. I can’t say enough good things about Mikael.”

Granlund spoke about what it means to represent his country: “I have always loved playing for Team Finland. As a young player in Finland, one of the biggest things you can achieve in your hockey career is to play for your country.”

The 22-year-old Eklund has opened his eyes with a fast start to his second full NHL season. The winger is second on the Sharks with 18 assists and 23 points and is on pace to set career highs in both areas with ease.

So it was credible for good reason when a Swedish report said William Eklund would make the team. But it looks like he narrowly missed the cut for Team Sweden.

The 4 Nations Face-Off will take place from February 12th to 20th.
