Bring your Christmas tree home safely

BOISE, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) – As Christmas approaches, families in Idaho are looking for the perfect Christmas tree. AAA offers some safety tips to help you bring your tree home safely.

“In previous AAA research, 60% of respondents had experienced a tree falling on or off their vehicle,” said Matthew Conde, director of public affairs for AAA Idaho. “To adapt a popular song: When you tie up your tree, make sure you check it twice.”

To transport a tree safely, capture it at the tree site. Make sure you cover the roof of your vehicle with a blanket or tarp to protect the paint. Attach the tree from top to bottom, making sure the trunk is facing the front of the vehicle. Use a strong rope or bungee cord to secure the tree, not a cord. Pull from as many directions as possible to make sure it doesn’t move.

If you are transporting the tree in a minivan, remove the back seats or consider a truck. It is also recommended to use country roads as they are usually designed for slower speeds and are less crowded

“When you bring your tree home and put it in place, remember to keep it moisturized. Additives to your tree stand’s water can also help keep your tree fresh throughout the season,” Conde said. “Never leave Christmas lights or candles unattended, especially when sleeping overnight.”
