Brooklyn shooting: Man killed, woman injured after police chase sparks officer-involved shooting in Crown Heights

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (WABC) — A man was shot and a woman was injured in a police-involved shooting in Brooklyn, according to NYPD officials.

Officers first responded to 81 North Portland Ave. just before 3 p.m. to reports of shots fired and were met by a witness who described a vehicle with a foreign license plate fleeing the scene.

Officials say NYPD members located the vehicle heading eastbound on Fulton Street and Washington Avenue.

They say a police chase ensued when the vehicle realized they were being followed by cutting through traffic and running a red light to get away.

Police were eventually able to stop the car, which was stuck behind traffic on Utica Avenue in the Crown Heights section.

The officers exited their vehicle with guns drawn and asked the driver and passenger to show their hands.

NYPD officials say a 21-year-old man in the passenger seat tried to get out but couldn’t fully open the door due to cars double-parked. They say the suspect had a gun in his hand and pointed it at the officers. The officers then began shooting.

Meanwhile, a 23-year-old woman who was sitting on the driver’s side got out of the vehicle and ran.

At some point, officials say, one of the officers began screaming “baby, baby” after spotting a child in the back seat of the car and ordered the other officer to stop shooting. The child, who was not in a car seat, was safely removed from the vehicle and taken to the hospital for evaluation.

The woman, believed to be the child’s mother, was taken into custody after a short foot chase. She suffered two gunshot wounds to her right thigh. No charges have yet been brought against them.

Officials say the man who aimed his gun was shot multiple times and later died. The NYPD showed Eyewitness News body camera footage of the suspect pointing his gun directly at the officer.

The police officers involved in the incident were taken to a local hospital but were not injured by gunfire.

NYPD officials say the semi-automatic weapon recovered at the scene had a capacity for 30 rounds. It is not yet clear whether the suspect fired any shots.

As for the man killed, police say he was wanted for a “vicious” murder that occurred on March 28, 2024 at Belmont and Euclid Avenues in East New York and had been on the run since then. According to police, the 21-year-old suspect walked up to a 21-year-old victim and shot him multiple times in the upper body. The victim died in hospital.

Officials say police fired about 18 or 19 shots during the clash.

An investigation is underway.
