So you want one Performance-oriented hatchback model with rear engine and massive fender flares. You could Get a Renault R5 Turboand be just like everyone else, or you could be unique and get this: The 1984 Sbarro Super Eight.

The R5 Turbo does have a turbocharger, but it’s a flimsy little four-cylinder. You could have done that double That displacement, which I’m told, there is no replacement for without sacrificing the widebody hatchback form factor. Imagine it. You roll up to your local Cars and Coffee, among all the R5 Turbos and Ferraris (I’m assuming your local Cars and Coffee is in Southern California and therefore filled with anything but rusted Subarus and bagged-up GTIs) and show you to all of you hereby. Is it an R5? Somehow, but better. Is it a Ferrari? Somehow, but better!

In fact, the Super Eight began life as a Ferrari. Underneath this hatchback body is the chassis of a 308 GTB, shortened and reworked to suit this extremely practical body. Does it have significantly more cargo space than the original 308? Hear. We are not here to ask such questions.

The Sbarro Super Eight is at Bring A Trailer in ParisAnd figuring out how to register an imported one-off Ferrari that has been rebuilt, rebadged and trademarked with the name of a man from Switzerland is left as an exercise for the reader. If you can afford the car, you probably can Grease palms as needed to make this a legal everyday vehicle. You can, and you should.
