Screenplay and direction: Tilman SingerThe film follows 17-year-old American Gretchen (Schafer), who escapes to a holiday resort in Bavaria with her father Luis (Márton Csókás), stepmother Beth (Jessica Henwick) and 8-year-old stepsister Alma (Mila Statt).

The resort owner Mr. König (Dan Stevens) finds Gretchen a job as a receptionist at a nearby lodge, where one day she is chased back to her new home by a mysterious hooded figure with glowing eyes on her bicycle. When no one believes she was attacked, she is forced to do most of the investigation on her own. What she uncovers is pretty crazy and might blow your mind.

Is cuckoo Worth seeing?

cuckoo Reviews are mixed but mostly positive, with a 78 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 60 percent audience score. Mashable’s own reviewer Siddhant Adlakha calls it “incredibly strange and slyly funny.”

“Whatever the film’s more obvious horrors, whether its spooky atmosphere or its attempts at moral and emotional obscenities, they are all tied to Schafer’s increasing physical and emotional despondency,” Adlakha wrote in his review. “She doesn’t just save the film. She Is the film, which makes it all the more remarkable to watch.”

As Schäfer’s first leading role in a film, she is awesome. And its performance alone makes it worth a look. And of course there’s Dan Stevens.

If you skipped the big screen, you’re in luck. cuckoo has been available to watch at home since September 17th.
