The Minnesota Wild weren’t supposed to be very good this season, but the locker room never got that memo. They played for each other all year and Kirill Kaprizov was one of the best players in the sport. It wouldn’t be a bad time for him to compete for the MVP award, and he’s off to a great start.

Minnesota Wild’s Kirill Kaprizov has his eyes on the big one

The Minnesota Wild played against the Buffalo Sabers on Wednesday night. Kirill Kaprizov was back in the squad and announced his presence with his 14th goal of the season. It was only the 22nd game of the season for John Hynes’ club and their superstar looked like a contender for the Hart Trophy. The sports betting providers seem to agree.

Yes, you read that correctly. The Minnesota Wild currently employ a player who is considered the best in hockey. Marian Gaborik was a fun star. Zach Parise was seven years into his professional career. Kaprizov simply hits differently. This is a 27-year-old who is currently in his fifth season of NHL hockey. He has scored 174 goals, but this season the pace has been different than ever before.

Kaprizov leads the NHL with 35 points. His 14 goals rank tied for fourth in the league. He was a catalyst for a Wild team that overperformed. Their 14-4-4 record trails only the Winnipeg Jets in all of sports. To say he was great would be an exaggeration.

The Wild needs to maintain this pace. The hard thing about coming from nothing is that you never get early credit. The season lasts 82 games and no one will believe that Minnesota can last at least until halftime. If they can keep up, it will be because Kaprizov remains one of the best players in the game.

If Kaprizov stays on this path until the end of the season, he will continue to make waves at the national level. Last year it was defenseman Brock Faber who threatened Connor Bedard for the Calder Cup. Being a standout rookie is one thing. Being the best player in the entire league is a completely different matter.
