Canadians plead not guilty in Monterey County shooting

A Canadian man at the center of a murder spree in Monterey County appeared in court for the first time Monday along with his alleged co-conspirator. Devin Wolfgang Vandorhoef, 25, and Darius Avery Whyte, 25, both of Canada, were charged with attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder and burglary. Whyte was already in court on Friday, but his arraignment was postponed to allow Vandorhoef to recover from injuries sustained during the alleged incident. The co-defendants are accused of flying to Monterey County, faking a package delivery and then stabbing two people – one of whom Vandorhoef knew through an online video game and was “obsessed with” according to investigators. Vandorhoef posed as a delivery man and carried a package that contained handcuffs, a knife and duct tape, according to a spokesman for the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. The spokesman is unsure how the suspect intended to use these items. When the friend opened the door, Vandorhoef began stabbing him. He suffered serious injuries and is expected to survive, the spokesman said. The friend came to her boyfriend’s aid and stabbed the suspect with a sharp metal object, the spokesman said. Vandorhoef then strangled and stabbed the woman, causing moderate injuries. Vandorhoef suffered several serious stab wounds during the fight. Whyte was questioned at the scene but said he had no idea what was going on and was allowed to walk away. Further investigation revealed that he was part of the plan and was arrested on a tarmac in San Jose on Monday morning as he prepared to fly back to Canada. His alleged involvement in the scheme has yet to be disclosed. The co-defendants are scheduled to appear in court again on December 10th.
