Canby man suffers ‘medical event’ and dies before car crash in Salem

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A man had a “medical event” before being involved in a car accident in Salem and later died at the hospital, authorities said.

Brett Dhone, 37, of Canby, died in a crash near Martin Luther King Jr Parkway Friday morning, Salem police said in a news release.

Officers, along with other emergency responders, responded to reports of an accident around 7:30 a.m.

When police arrived, they spoke with witnesses who said a driver of a southbound pickup truck “slowly left the roadway after passing through the intersection at Broadway ST NE.”

“The truck struck a tree and backed onto the roadway where the vehicle stopped,” Salem police said. “Bystanders attempted to provide medical assistance to the unresponsive driver before paramedics arrived.”

Dhone was taken to Salem Health and later died, officials said.

“The traffic team’s preliminary investigation suggests that Dhone suffered a medical incident before the collision,” police said.

A section of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway was closed for two hours during the investigation, authorities said.

The investigation is ongoing.
