Cannabis cafes and theaters? New rules could change marijuana consumption in moderation.

The Cannabis Control Commission could soon change where people can consume marijuana in Massachusetts. It introduces new draft regulations with the aim of enabling the consumption of cannabis in places such as cafes, shopping centers or cinemas. And some companies say they’re excited about the opportunity. The acting chairman of the Cannabis Control Commission calls this a big step forward. At Summit Lounge in Worcester, members bring their own cannabis and consume it on site. That would be limited to five days and 24 events per year. Communities can choose to opt-in. The commission says public safety is its top priority and plans to take protective measures. “We need special training to help an agent in a consumption lounge recognize whether you or someone else might be impaired,” Stebbins said. In the Summit Lounge they say it is progress. “Once I am able to provide a safe, clean product to my customer base, everyone will be better off,” Moon said. A timeline for when this might come into effect is still unclear. The acting chairman says it will take time to work through the regulations and work with communities to decide whether they want to opt in.

Now the Cannabis Control Commission is launching its draft social consumption regulations to enable people to purchase and consume cannabis locally.

“I think there is general excitement. People have been saying they want this since the cannabis question was passed in 2016,” said Bruce Stebbins.

The Commission proposes three types of licenses:

  • Addition: A consumption room that could be attached to an existing marijuana facility.
  • Hospitality: A consumption space in a yoga studio, lounge, comedy club, theater or lodging facility.
  • Organizer: For hosting cannabis consumption events.

They would be limited to five days and 24 events per year.

Communities can choose to opt-in. The commission says public safety is its top priority and plans to implement protective measures.
