Cardinals land 8-year-old veteran in the Big League deal in the last second

The St. Louis Cardinals were waiting for a while to move the Bullpen in the free agency, but that was exactly what they did on Thursday morning.

There was a lot of chattering over the bullpen of the cardinals and how they could use another reliable arm after they lost Andrew Kittredge in the Free Agency. It took a long time, but the cardinals did exactly on Thursday by signing a veteran of the Big League in Big League, according to the team.

“We signed RHP Phil Maton for a one -year contract,” said the team. “In the 2024 season, Maton had a 3.66-eer in combined 71 games for the (New York Mets) and (Tampa Bay Rays). LHP Bailey Horn was shown for the order of space for Maton on the 40-player service plan.”

Maton was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 20th round of the Major League Baseball amateur design in 2015 and finally gave his Big League debut in 2017. During his eight-year Big League career, he spent time with the Padres, Cleveland Guardians, Houston Astros, Tampa Bay Rays and the New Yorker.

The veteran Righty has a career of 4.16 ERA, but has not had an ERA in one season since 2021. In 2024 he had a 3.66 ERA in 71 appearances at the Mets and Rays. In 2023 he had a 3.00 ERA with the Astros in 68 appearances and was then temporarily associated with St. Louis. In 2022 he had an ERA of 3.84 in 67 appearances with the Astros.

All in all, there could have been no better signing for St. Louis at this point, at least on paper.
