Castle Point teen awaits bail hearing for 2023 QuikTrip murder

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – St. Louis County Circuit Court has scheduled a bond hearing for Monday for an 18-year-old from Castle Point for a 2023 murder at a Hazelwood QuikTrip.

According to the St. Louis County Police Department’s probable cause statement, the homicide occurred shortly before 10:30 p.m. on September 30, 2023, in the 7400 block of North Lindbergh Boulevard.

Police said a black Acura pulled into the QuikTrip parking lot and a red Dodge Avenger pulled in a short time later.

Three people in the Avenger began shooting at the Acura and the people in that vehicle. Charles Carbon, a passenger in the Acura, suffered fatal injuries.

Police identified two of the shooters as Dakota Shelton and JaQuan Clarett.

Clarett was arrested and charged in November 2023. He is currently awaiting trial and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 17, 2025.

Meanwhile, Shelton, who was a minor at the time of the shooting, was arrested on Nov. 25.

The St. Louis County District Attorney’s Office charged Shelton with second-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. The court sentenced Shelton to prison on a $500,000 cash bond. After Monday’s bond hearing, Shelton will be back in court for a preliminary hearing on Dec. 18.
