Celebrate the Black History Month with PBS Wisconsin

In February the United States celebrated the Black History Month. With the origin in the early 20th century, the month is a long commemoration of the extensive excellence and contributions of black Americans to every aspect of cultural, social, political and economic life in our nation. It also serves as a time to think about the ongoing battles for civil rights with which black communities are confronted, which continue to inform and inspire social movements around the world.

Great migrations: a people on the move

In great migrations: a people who are moving in motion, joining Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr., while researching a groundbreaking research by the African -American movement over the 20th and 21st centuries and shows how migration fundamentally redesigned American culture. This powerful, four -part documentation series follows three transformative migrations: the historical movement from deep south to northern cities, the subsequent reverse migration back south and the youngest large -scale immigration of Africans and West Indians to the USA.

American judiciary in court: People v. Newton

Investigate the pioneering legal proceedings from 1968 against Huey Newton, co -founder of the Black Panther Party, its arrest and law enforcement because of the fatal shootout of a police officer in 1967 became a seismic moment in the fight for racist justice.

Newton’s process set up the deep racist prejudices in the legal system, questioned the all-white jury standard and inflamed a movement that demanded fairness and equality in accordance with the law. American coup: Wilmington 1898 | American experience

In 1898 Wilmington, North Carolina, was a flourishing city of Black Majority-a Luminous Fire The Progress of Reconstruction. But on November 10, the white supremacists carried out the only successful coup in the history of US history and stormed a chosen, multicultural government violently.

VEL Phillips: Dream Big Dreams | PBS Wisconsin Documentary Films

Find out the history of civil rights leader, VEL Phillips, a Wisconsin icon of many “Firmsts” as part of your heritage. Phillips was the first woman and the black person who was chosen in the Milwaukee Common Council, the first black woman who was chosen as a judge and as Foreign Minister Wisconsin. A civil rights pioneer and a power plant that used Phillips for fair housing, formation and equality of women. Phillips died in 2018 and did the story again in 2024 when the VEL Phillips statue was unveiled in Wisconsin State Capitol. Phillips is the first black woman to be remembered.

Why breed is important | A digital series by PBS Wisconsin

With three seasons of episodes and a fourth in production, Why breed is important is a award -winning digital series that increases the importance of Wisconsin’s black communities. The producer and host Angela Fitzgerald combines in conversation with everyday people, whose work and obligation in relation to breed, identity and achievement of racial authorization in the state are about. The series tells stories of artists, organizers of the community, members of the health professions and subject experts and conveys the lived experiences of blacks who live in Wisconsin. It examines topics historically and urgently at the same time and at the same time offers hope, guidance and resources in order to thrive.

More than a month for black history?
