Central Idaho’s porch camera captures a giant blue fireball

Residents from eastern to central Idaho shared their thoughts on social media this week after witnessing a large, bluish fireball caught on at least one home camera. The footage was reminiscent of an incident in 2023 seen over an airport in Australia.

Many Idahoans may have witnessed an impressive spectacle earlier this week when a huge fireball entered the Earth’s atmosphere, leaving a bright blue trail that was captured by surveillance cameras. A Blink object camera in central Idaho recorded the event, which was likely a large space rock made of magnesium, which gives this debris its bluish hue.

The video showing the fireball has been uploaded Reddit on Thanksgiving Day (November 28), but may have taken place earlier in the week based on online comments. Some who offered their thoughts on the video came from fellow Idahoans who had seen the same fireball from other regions of the state. An almost identical-looking fireball was captured by an airport camera in Australia in 2023.

The Reddit post was shared by Fluffy_Seaweed 3963 and titled “What is that? Central IdahoAccording to the website, a south-facing motion camera captured the space rock. According to this, an estimated 17,000 meteors penetrate the Earth’s atmosphere every year iberdrola.com.
