Chargers are expected to trade for the experienced 3x All-Pro defender

The Los Angeles Chargers’ 2024 run ended abruptly on Saturday when they were knocked out of the playoffs by the Houston Texans. As the offseason has officially begun, it is obvious that they still have a lot of work to do to get their roster into championship shape.

Bleacher Report tried to fix the Chargers team with a big trade. Their suggestion was to target New Orleans Saints veteran safety Tyrann Mathieu

Chargers get: S Tyrann Mathieu, Saints Get: 2025 5th Round Pick

Playoff-caliber teams may value Mathieu’s leadership skills, his experience on a Super Bowl-winning team and his elite ball production. He could be one of the missing pieces for a team trying to open its title contention window.

During the second half of the 2024 season, safety Tony Jefferson played a prominent role in Los Angeles’ defense, but he barely made an impact. Since Week 13, he has recorded 27 tackles, including one for a loss.

If the Chargers want a versatile defensive back who can bring more to the secondary, Mathieu fits the bill as one of the league’s best ballhawks.

Although Mathieu is turning 33, he continues to perform at an elite level. The experienced safety has consistently demonstrated his consistency since joining the Saints in 2022 and has appeared in every game.

Mathieu’s influence is undeniable. He has recorded at least three interceptions in each of the last six seasons while limiting opposing quarterbacks to a passer rating of 77.4 or lower in each of his last three seasons.

The Chargers struggled to maintain a healthy secondary throughout the 2024 season, including at safety. But with Derwin James and Alohi Gilman under contract and the team likely making re-signing Elijah Molden a priority, the safety room will be loaded with talent.

However, the idea of bringing James and Mathieu together is more than tempting and for the price it would be a bargain.

Matthieu’s contract runs through the 2025 season and would count $11.3 million against the cap. The cap is far from ideal, but if they feel like he’s a long-term option, it could come down significantly.
