Charleston police offer tips for preventing package thefts

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Charleston police are targeting porch piracy or package theft this holiday season.

“With the holiday season approaching and people ordering packages online, package delivery is increasing,” said Lt. Tony Hazelett. “Package thefts occur across the country at this time of year and we are more or less proactive in addressing this by increasing patrols in areas where we have had problems in recent years.”

It can happen that people lose track of the packages they have ordered and do not hand them in on the first delivery.

The Charleston Police Department recommends signing up for delivery alerts, seeking alternative delivery methods or locations, using surveillance cameras or installing a lockbox.

If you receive a notification that your package has been delivered – or if you notice a package sitting on your porch – bring it over as quickly as possible to make sure no one takes it.

“The Charleston Police Department has increased its efforts this year to curb this type of criminal behavior,” said Police Chief Scott Dempsey. “Our patrol officers and detectives work hard to do our part to protect your property through a variety of means.”

Lieutenant Hazelett said if you notice any suspicious activity or are a victim of package theft, you should contact police and report it.
